Annie Gautier, new director for the artist-run association ARCA
For the past two years, Montreal has been the location of a Visual Arts Alliance meeting in early December. Usually there’s snow. But not this year. Nevertheless, it was a very productive visit.
The focus this year was a visit to the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal to discuss arrangements for the Fall 2012 CAMDO meeting, which they will be hosting on November 19-20th. The itinerary also included meetings with Sylvie Gilbert and John Latour at Artexte, Jean Lalonde, the RCAAQ’s publication genius, and Annie Gautier, the new Director of ARCA, the artist-run centres and collectives association, all of whom are partners in the CAMDO publications project. Many thanks to Pascal Normandin , Chef de la gestion des expositions / Head of Exhibitions Management at MBAM, and his staff, who gave a complete tour of the pavilions. Their entire collection, 4000 works, have been rehung, launched with the opening of the new wing for Canadian and Quebec art. They look spectacular.
Thanks also to Jean Lalonde for the tour of the new building at 2 Ste. Catherine St. W, a fabulous new home for the RCAAQ, Artexte and the artist-run centre VOX. Most exciting is the addition of a bookstore within the RCAAQ space, an essential promotional tool for the publishers of art books in Canada. The fixtures look fantastic.
Thanks also to Sylvie and Annie for taking so much time to bring me up to date on what they are doing and for considering various ways in which their organizations might collaborate with CAMDO, in the areas of publications especially.
